Estimation questions (how many golf balls can fit into a bus) are still being asked on interviews. However, as far as I know, not for dev positions. These questions are supposed to check problem solving and estimation skills and if that is their purpose and the interviewer understands that, then it's completely fine. If they're just doing it because someone else did it, then it's a waste of time.<br /><br />2. Home projects are fine, but some companies take it too far and give you huge projects that require a lot of time investment on your part, sometimes so much time that it feels like you're working without getting paid. As you mentioned, you want to test the essentials and that does not require lengthy projects that take days to complete.
